Grades vs. Test Scores

There’s no doubt that a your GPA is the most important factor when applying to college. But it’s also important to keep in mind that your GPA is just the baseline as almost everyone applying to a highly competitive college already has a high GPA. Therefore, your SAT/ACT scores can make all the difference in the overall admissions equation. Test scores give you an important opportunity to break away from the pack.

What’s the reason? GPA is extremely variable from one school to the next. For example, a 3.7 GPA at a private independent high school in New York may be worth more than a 4.0 GPA at a school in rural North Dakota. Then when you get into “weighted” GPAs, there are a whole slew of challenges in discerning what’s what. Because honors and AP/IB classes can be weighted at a school administrator’s choosing, the “weight” is highly arbitrary. Let’s not even get into how course content and difficulty can vary greatly across schools and even within schools by teacher! All in all, college admissions officers need another way to measure a student’s academic ability. Enter test scores.

At PA College Prep, we are committed to provide students the tools, values, and resources they need to achieve academic excellence.
